This Year 4 assessment has been designed to check pupils’ understanding of key grammar, punctuation and sentence structure skills in line with the National Curriculum. It includes a variety of question types that help children apply their knowledge independently, including recognising word classes, using fronted adverbials, applying apostrophes and improving sentence accuracy.

The test supports teachers in identifying strengths and next-step targets, while helping pupils build confidence and precision in their writing. This assessment also prepares children for the increasing expectations of Upper Key Stage 2 by encouraging accurate punctuation, secure sentence construction and thoughtful vocabulary choices.

We recommend that this assessment is done at the end of Term 1.
