This lesson introduces children to action words (verbs). Building on their understanding of subjects, pupils now discover that every sentence needs a doing or being word to make sense. The tasks provide two different opportunities to practise this skill: in one, children identify whether groups of words are complete sentences and underline the action word while in the other they complete unfinished sentences by choosing a verb that fits. By the end of the lesson, pupils begin to recognise verbs as a key part of sentence construction, preparing them for more complex sentence building later in the sequence.
