Apostrophes for Contraction

Apostrophes for Contraction

Year 2

This set of resources helps pupils understand how and why we use apostrophes to form contractions. Through the interactive PowerPoint, learners explore how two separate words can be joined into one with the apostrophe showing where letters have been left out. Examples range from simple changes (I am → I’m) to those that drop more than one letter (cannot → can’t). Activities include matching words to their contracted forms, rewriting sentences and identifying errors in placement. The accompanying printable tasks provide hands-on practice, from card-matching games to written exercises, making it easy to adapt for whole-class lessons, small groups or independent work.
